Buda Castle in the Castle District of Budapest

Budapest was originally two different cities, Buda and Pest both separated by the Danube River. The unification of the two cities took place in 1873 and since the city has been known as Budapest to this day.

We separated this guide for where to stay in Budapest on either side, the Buda side or the Pest side to help you decide which side is best for you. Each side is easily visited from one another and can be as little as a 5 minute journey by public transport depending on where you are or a walk across one of the bridges.

Downtown Pest/District V

Downtown Pest is a great option for where to stay in Budapest if you’re a luxury traveler or want to be in the heart of Pest along the river. This is where you will find the grandest 5 star resorts as well as high-end eateries and Michelin-star restaurants and luxury shopping along parts of Andrassy Avenue.

There are also some other great hotel options as well as attractions like St. Stephens Basilica and the Grand Parliament building. District V stretching on the waterfront area inwards a few blocks from the Margaret Bridge to the Petofi Bridge.

This is 4-star hotel is where we stayed during our time in Budapest. We found the location to be extremely convenient located just outside the Astoria stop and only a 15-minute walk to things to do in Budapest like St. Stephen’s Basilica. The hotel has a vintage feel to it and was even a filming location for the 2004 film, Being Julia.
